What is Sports Massage Therapy?

Sports Massage Therapy assists in correcting problems and imbalances in the body’s soft tissues that are specifically

caused by repetitive and strenuous physical activity. Sports massage treatments are more specialised than other general massage techniques, the areas treated depend on the sport undertaken and the aim of each treatment depends on the sports calendar, i.e. whether the treatment is pre or post event or for general maintenance.

The goal of a pre-event sports massage treatment is to stimulate and stretch the muscles, manipulating them to ensure maximum subtleness and flexibility and check for any potential issues.

The goal of post-event sports massage treatment is to aid recovery. This is achieved as the treatment will relieve any areas of tension, facilitate the elimination of toxins that have built up during the event, relax the muscles and improve circulation allowing them to rejuvenate, restore and repair to be stronger and more effective.

The goal of a general maintenance sports massage treatment is to improve circulation, eliminate toxins and ensure there are no unidentified underlying issues that may cause problems if untreated. In short a general MOT.

The combination of these types of treatments helps to maximise an athletes performance and minimise the likelihood of injury. Helping the athlete achieve their goals and be

the best they can be.
